Algorithms Whether you know it or not, algorithms shape your experience on social media platforms and in search engines. What is fed TO YOU is personalized based on who you are, past searches, content you engage with, and a host of other factors. This means you live in a bubble of information that you probably aren’t even aware you’re immersed in. In this assignment, you will explore the role of algorithms in shaping user experience on social media platforms. You will examine how algorithms personalize content and the ethical considerations that come with their use. This will help you understand how data-driven decisions influence user engagement, content visibility, and platform dynamics. Objectives: Understand how social media algorithms work. Explore the impact of algorithms on user behavior and content consumption. Analyze ethical concerns associated with algorithmic recommendations. Develop a critical thinking approach towards the influence of algorithms in modern digital spaces. Directions: Write a 3-4 page essay that addresses the following. Social Media Your paper should: Include a definition of algorithm and how it works in the context of social media platforms. Describe how social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc.) decide what content to show its users. What factors influence these decisions (e.g., user behavior, post popularity, timing, etc.)? Choose ONE platform to use as an example. Explore how social media algorithms impact the content you see on your feed. How does this benefit AND limit your social media experience? Explain what "echo chambers" and "filter bubbles" are in the context of social media algorithms. How can algorithms contribute to the formation of these phenomena? Demonstrate how social media algorithms encourage certain types of user behaviors (e.g., liking posts, sharing content, watching videos, etc.). How do these behaviors affect what content gets promoted on social media? Analyze the ethical concerns surrounding data privacy in relation to social media algorithms. How do algorithms collect data to personalize content, and what potential risks does this pose to user privacy? Provide an example of how a social media algorithm could be biased in terms of gender, race, or other factors. What are the potential consequences of this bias? Reflect on your own experience with social media platforms. Do you feel that the content you see is tailored to your interests, or do you ever feel like the algorithm is showing you content that is not relevant to you? Share a personal example or observation. Based on your research, what changes would you like to see in how social media algorithms work in the future? It also helps me understand what you're doing and suggestions I can make to help you improve your skills and grade. Include the reflection at the end of your essay, but it should come AFTER your essay and any citations. Answer the following questions in complete sentences. Describe how long you spent working on your paper. You don’t need to be exact. Did you work on it for 1 hour? 3 hours a day for 3 days? (Be honest) Describe any websites, programs, software you used to help with your paper and how you used them to help you write your paper. How many times did they help you? Describe at least one thing you learned while writing the paper. Think about your next essay, what did you do well on this essay that you would do again and what would you do differently next time?
