About the job

I am looking for an experienced architect or architectural designer to develop the schematic design of a Digital Fabrication & Material Innovation Research Institute in Al Jaddaf, Dubai. The project already has a developed concept, research, site analysis, precedent studies, zoning and early massing, so I am not looking to start from zero. The goal is to improve the existing direction and turn it into a coordinated and realistic architectural proposal. The required work includes an updated design strategy, finalized space program with approximate areas, site/study model at approximately 1:500, schematic floor plans at approximately 1:200, a key architectural section at approximately 1:200, main elevations at approximately 1:200, an overall coordinated 3D model, and one focused area developed in greater architectural detail. Supporting diagrams for circulation, structure, environmental strategy, facade and design development may also be required. The institute focuses on digital fabrication, robotic fabrication, 3D printing, computational design, material research, prototyping, testing and circular construction. The main concept is for the building to operate as a living laboratory, where ideas move through a process of Design → Fabricate → Test → Improve → Build → Reuse. The architecture should reflect this process rather than simply contain workshops and laboratories. The project is based around three main themes: Material Intelligence & Computation, Research Through Making, and Circular Construction & Lifecycle. Material behavior, climate, fabrication and structure should influence the architecture. Computational or parametric design can be used where it has a real purpose, but I do not want unnecessary futuristic forms or decorative patterns with no functional reason. There is already an initial site concept with several connected volumes organized around a central courtyard. The scheme includes research and studio spaces, laboratories, a large fabrication and prototyping hall, public and collaboration spaces, outdoor prototype areas and a strong relationship with Dubai Creek. Parking, loading and servicing are generally placed toward the road side. The existing design can be improved, but I do not want it replaced with a completely unrelated concept. The fabrication hall should be one of the strongest spaces in the project. It may include robotic fabrication, 3D printing, CNC equipment, material preparation, prototype assembly and testing. It should have realistic loading and service access, storage, large openings where needed, and a direct relationship with an outdoor prototype/testing area. At the same time, parts of the making process should be visible from shared or public areas where appropriate. The central courtyard should become the shared heart of the building and connect research, fabrication, collaboration and public activity. It could support shaded outdoor working, prototype display, informal gathering or temporary experiments. The relationship between the fabrication hall, courtyard and prototype yard is especially important. The site is in Al Jaddaf, Dubai, with a strong relationship to Dubai Creek. The Creek side should benefit from views, landscape, public and quieter research functions, while the road side can accommodate parking, servicing, loading and technical uses. Pedestrian routes should be clearly separated from heavy service and material-delivery circulation. The space program also needs to be finalized, including approximate areas and relationships between research studios, material labs, robotics labs, fabrication areas, workshops, prototype testing, storage, offices, meeting spaces, exhibition areas, library/research areas, administration and support spaces. The planning should show a logical workflow between design, research, fabrication, testing and display. The floor plans should be proper schematic architectural plans rather than zoning diagrams. The key section should clearly show the most important spatial relationships, especially the fabrication hall, courtyard and research/public spaces. The elevations and facade should respond to orientation, climate, internal functions, structure and fabrication logic rather than being treated as decorative skins. Environmental design is important because of Dubai’s climate. The proposal should consider solar orientation, shading, controlled glazing, courtyards, landscape, low-water planting, facade depth and photovoltaic systems where appropriate. These strategies should be integrated into the architecture and, where possible, connected to the fabrication theme. The project should also begin to establish a clear structural and construction strategy, including the primary structure, large-span system for the fabrication hall, roof, facade support and potential modular or prefabricated components. I am interested in realistic ideas related to adaptable systems, reusable components, dry assembly and design for disassembly. One part of the building needs to be developed in more detail. The current preferred option is the Fabrication Hall + Central Courtyard + Prototype Yard, but I am open to another focused area if it better explains the project. A coordinated 3D architectural model is also required. The priority is strong architecture first and visualization second. I am not looking for someone who only produces attractive renders without resolving the actual plans, sections, structure and circulation. I will provide the existing research, concept, site analysis, precedent studies, zoning, massing and diagrams. I am looking for someone with strong architectural design and design-development skills, ideally with experience in research facilities, laboratories, fabrication spaces, digital fabrication, modular construction, Rhino/Grasshopper, Revit, AutoCAD or SketchUp. Please send examples of projects where you worked on the actual architectural design, including plans, sections, elevations, massing or 3D developm
